We would like to thank all of the agents who took time from their busy schedules to complete our online survey. The information we received will help us to support you better as we continue to look after international students affected by the earthquake, and as we look at the future implications of the earthquake for international students coming to New Zealand.
If you did not have time to complete the survey, but would like to share your thoughts on the effect of the earthquake on your clients, we would be happy to hear from you via e-mail. Please reply to the e-mail you received with this update.
New Zealand held a Commemoration Day for victims of the Christchurch earthquake on Friday, March 18. Schools and businesses in the Canterbury region were closed on that day. A service took place in Christchurch, attended by New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key, as well as Prince William and the Prime Minister of Australia. Tens of thousands of New Zealanders also attended the service and it was broadcast on national television.
This is the message going out to our friends and partners around the world. Not only are almost all of Christchurch’s educational institutions open again (see below) but everything else that makes studying in New Zealand so special for your clients is still available to them. Whether they complement their studies with travel, sports, entertainment, shopping or social activities, students will have the full range of experiences you’ve come to expect from studying in New Zealand. And yes, we are still hosting the 2011 Rugby World Cup!
As we have said before, only a very small area was affected by the February 22 earthquake. Although this was a very serious event, almost all of New Zealand was physically unaffected and continues to welcome students from around the world.
As we have said before, only a very small area was affected by the February 22 earthquake. Although this was a very serious event, almost all of New Zealand was physically unaffected and continues to welcome students from around the world.
The message is getting through, as many of you have told us that you are continuing to promote New Zealand as a study destination the same way you always have. The numbers also back this up. As of the beginning of March, we had almost exactly the same number of international students on our shores as we did at the same time last year!
Residents of Christchurch and students who left the city are beginning to return to their homes. As the clean up continues, more parts of the city are getting back to normal routines. Only a handful of residents have continued issues with access to running water. Fewer than three per cent of the over 61,000 residences inspected so far have been deemed unsafe to enter.
By the end of this week 157 schools in Christchurch city will be open. That means 97 per cent of schools in the city are operating, although some are sharing facilities with another school. You should contact the schools where you have students enrolled to confirm any changes to the buildings or grounds. You can also check this page on the Ministry of Education website.
Many international students who left Christchurch after the earthquake have been enrolled in schools in other areas. The Ministry of Education has consulted with the schools sector and Education New Zealand to draw up guidelines for schools on the transfer of students, fees, and refunds. You can access the guidelines here.
Lincoln University and the University of Canterbury resumed classes on March 14 (programmes at the University of Canterbury have rolling start dates), and CPIT has resumed classes for some programmes at their Sullivan Avenue campus and has also relocated some courses to Lincoln University. They expect to have access to their main campus in the CBD very soon, and should be able to begin holding classes there in the near future. All of these institutions are offering a full academic programme this year, although some key dates may shift due to the late start. Check their websites for more detail.
At this time, 68 of the city’s Private Training Establishments have been able to reopen their doors. Some are in their original locations, some are operating from temporary locations, and others remain closed. Contact the institutions directly for updates, or if they are not reachable contact NZQA.
Information on all tertiary providers can be found on the NZQA website here.
Civil Defence is continuing to open more parts of the CBD to the public as it becomes safe to do so. A small area remains completely off limits due to concerns for public safety.
The confirmed number of fatalities from the earthquake remains at 166. Authorities have lowered the expected total to 182. Police have officially identified 146 of the victims, and their names are available here. Current information suggests that 73 international students are among the victims – 71 from the CTV building and two University of Otago students who were in Christchurch for a visit. A permanent memorial is being planned for the CTV building site.
The New Zealand Government is setting up a Royal Commission to lead an inquiry into the loss of life from the earthquake. It will investigate why a small number of buildings, including the CTV building which housed King’s Education, collapsed during the quake. It is hoped that the results of the inquiry will prevent another tragedy of this kind in New Zealand.
We will continue to provide you with updates when new developments take place.
