When I was young, my parents ran a snack bar in our small town.
One evening in early April, my mother told me to fill in at the snack bar for a worker who had the flu. I told her I would mess it up, because I had never worked at the bar before. I noticed that instead of making money, I would end up owing it.
“You can do it,” said my mother, “Besides, you won’t get much business until lunch.”
“But I’ll never remember the orders, and I’m no good with money. Please, Mom, don’t make me.
“Then I’ll help you,” she said.
I shrugged my shoulders. I thought my mother’s idea was a bad one, but I obeyed.
When I got to the bar the next day, I found my mother was worry. Because the weather that day was rainy and cold, people wanted hot snacks and drinks. At first, I was really slow at taking the orders and making change. The line of people grew, and everybody seemed impatient, I was so nervous that my hands shook, and I broke a cup into pieces. What a mess! Then my mother came to help me, and she also showed me how to make change. If someone gave me $ 5 for something that cost $ 3.25, I handed over three quarters and a dollar and said, “75 cents makes four dollars, plus one dollar makes five.” Things went more smoothly after that.
By the end of the day, I could remember orders, add up the bill, and make change quickly with a smile. I was even a little disappointed when the sun came out and dried up business. My mother said she was proud of me, and when she suggested that I work at the snack bar again next year, I did not even shrug. I was too busy imagining the restaurant I would open one day.

在我年轻时，我的父母在我们的小镇开了一家小吃店。
在一个四月初的晚上，我母亲告诉我要我去小吃店去工作，代替一个生病发烧的员工。我告诉她我一定会搞砸的，因为我从来未曾在小吃店做过。我知道我会把该赚钱的搞成赔钱了。
"你会没问题的"，我妈这样说,"而且在中午以前是没多少生意的“。
“可是我一定会记不得人家点的东西，而且我对找钱又没概念"。拜托！妈，别叫我去做这事。
"那我会帮你啦！"她说
我耸耸了肩，我觉得我妈她出了很糟的主意，不过我还是照她的意思。当第二天我到了小吃店时，我发现我妈她一副烦心的样子。因为天气变得下雨又冷，客人都想吃点热食和喝酒，刚开始我点菜很慢，找钱也很慢，那排队的人是越来越长，而且感觉上他们都很没耐心的样子。我紧张的手都发抖了，把杯子打个粉碎稀烂。哇，真是糟透了！然后我妈过来帮我，她还教我如何找钱，如果有客人给你5元，而价钱是3.25元，那我就找三个25分和一张一元钞票，说：75分钱凑成四元，在加上一元钞票就是五元整。 而事情变得越来越顺利了。
当一天的工作快结束时，我也都记得客人点的东西，也在算钱和找钱时面带笑容。甚至于我还有点失望为甚么太阳要出来那么快，带走了好生意。我妈对我说她觉得好骄傲我所作的，当我妈她建议明年（天）我在回去小吃店工作时，我都没再耸肩了，因为我正在幻想着有一天开一家餐厅呢。
